The Wooded Difference

We make good-looking wood that works.

Every board is built start to finish in our Cape Cod shop — over 30 steps with premium hardwood, hand-picked from a New England supplier.

Three days of finishing: warmed Timber Tonic, then coats of our own Jack Wax. Built to outlive every other tool in your kitchen.

Common questions

Wood questions, good answers.

What goes into one, what to expect, and how to care for it.

How thick are Wooded boards? +
Most of our boards are a full 2 inches thick. We follow what we call our Rule of 8 Inches — a board's thickness should be at least one-eighth of its width. Some larger pieces are 1.75" or 2.5" depending on dimensions and species. Thicker stock means more stability, more grain depth, and a board that holds up to decades of daily use.
What woods do you use? +
We work primarily with hard maple, black walnut, and American cherry — sourced from a New England hardwood supplier and hand-picked piece by piece. Occasional pieces feature hickory, padauk, or canarywood for visual contrast. All are food-safe hardwoods well-suited to a board you'll use every day.
How long will a Wooded board last? +
Cared for properly, decades. The combination of thick premium stock, our 30+ step build, and our Timber Tonic + Jack Wax finish is engineered for daily use over a lifetime. Most of the wear that ends a cutting board's life — warping, splitting, dishwasher damage — is preventable. Our care guide covers it.
Can I customize species, size, and details? +
Yes — that's what our Wooded Designs line is for. Choose Classic for fully customizable build-to-order (you pick species, size, edges, juice groove, handles, feet) or Signature for limited-run designs we've already shaped. Both are built to your spec in our Cape Cod shop and ship in 2–3 weeks.
How do you finish your boards? +
Three days of finishing. We start by warming Timber Tonic — our food-safe oil blend — and letting the board drink it in over multiple coats. Then we layer on Jack Wax, our beeswax + mineral oil sealing balm, building a finish that's smooth, water-resistant, and easy to maintain at home.
How do I care for a Wooded board? +
Hand wash with warm water and mild soap, then dry immediately and stand on edge so air circulates on both sides. Never soak it, never put it in the dishwasher. Apply a food-safe board butter (we make Jack Wax for exactly this) every few weeks, more often if you cook with high-acid foods. Cared for this way, the board lasts decades.
Where are they made? +
Every Wooded board is built start to finish in our Cape Cod shop. Hardwood comes from a New England supplier; everything else — milling, glue-up, planing, sanding, finishing — happens here, by hand, in the same room.
How long does shipping take? +
Boards already finished ship in 2–3 business days from our Cape Cod shop. Build-to-order boards (Wooded Designs) take 2–3 weeks from order to ship. Shipping is free within the continental US.
Are these handmade? +
Yes — every Wooded board is handcrafted start-to-finish in our Cape Cod shop. We say handcrafted because every step happens by hand, by humans, in our shop.
