How they're made

The Wooded Difference

We make good-looking wood that works.

Our boards are built to be more than just a hefty, high-quality hunk of utility. We believe they should be beautiful to look at, and individually distinctive.

That's why we take time to arrange each of them individually, taking inspiration from the shapes, colors and contrasts of the wood. We shape the look of each board by feel, first with a rough concept that morphs into a series of wood strips that we arrange to be expressive and visually interesting.

Each of these boards are too unique for a generic listing, so we name them and present them one-at-a-time. What you see is exactly what you get.

Common questions

How thick are Wooded boards? +

Thickness prevents warping — we follow our "Rule of 8 inches". For rectangular boards (our dominant shape)... for every 8 inches of width, we recommend 1 inch of thickness. That mass gives you a stable, solid surface that won’t slide around while you work. It also means the board can be sanded and re-finished multiple times over decades of use.

What woods do you use? +

We work primarily with hard maple, black walnut, and American cherry — sourced from a New England hardwood supplier and hand-picked piece by piece. Occasional pieces feature different domestic and exotic hardwoods. All are food-safe hardwoods well-suited to a board you'll use every day.

What is an end-grain cutting board? +

End-grain refers to how the wood fibers are oriented in the cutting surface. In an end-grain board, blocks of wood are stood upright and glued together so the fiber bundles point straight up toward the knife. This is the same construction used in traditional butcher blocks. It's harder to make than a standard edge-grain or face-grain board, but we think it's worth it!

How does end-grain compare to edge-grain or face-grain? +

Edge-grain and face-grain boards expose horizontal wood fibers to the knife. The blade has to slice across each fiber, which dulls the edge faster and leaves visible scoring on the board. End-grain shows the cross-section of each fiber instead — the blade slips between fibers, which then close back together. The result: gentler on knives, fewer permanent marks, and a much longer-lasting surface.

Is end-grain better for my knife edges? +

Yes. The vertical orientation of the wood fibers means the knife edge isn't being slammed against horizontal fiber on every cut — it pushes between fibers instead. Most professional cooks and serious home cooks prefer end-grain for daily use because their knives stay sharp longer between honings.

How long will a Wooded board last? +

We build boards that, with proper care, can last decades or generation. We build boards thick and stout in profile. We assemble with a minimalist approach; using thicker lumber, wider slices and fewer joints than many other board-makers. We carefully select and arrange lumber to ensure no structural flaws (like knots, cracks or unsealed joints) are present.

Can you make me a custom board? +

Yes, we can make a custom butcher block cutting board to your specifications (within our capabilities). Check out our Commissions page for more information and to send a request. We'll work with you personally to make a board that's a perfect fit for your kitchen.

How do you finish your boards? +

We formulate our own blend of wax & oil compounds, Jack Wax. Every Wooded cutting board is treated with a heated coat Timber Tonic oil, and two coats of wax. All of these formulations are simple, food-safe mixes of beeswax, coconut oil and food-grade mineral oil. If you have a special finishing request, feel free to contact us via the Service page.

How do I care for a Wooded board? +

Rinse with water and a mild soap or vinegar-based detergent after use — never put it in the dishwasher. Store it upright so air circulates on both sides. For occasional cooks, a coat & buff of Jack Wax Rapid Rub (or equivalent cutting board wax compound) will keep your board fresh and protected. For heavy duty chefs, we recommend oiling first, then waxing (see our Jack Pack).

Are end-grain boards dishwasher safe? +

No. Heat and prolonged moisture warp wood and break down the glue between blocks. Always hand wash, dry standing on edge (or resting on rubber feet).

Where are they made? +

Every Wooded board is built start to finish in our shop, located on Cape Cod (Mashpee). We select rough cut lumber by hand at a New England based supplier, and construct the boards from scratch, in-house.

How long does shipping take? +

Single-Edition boards are in stock and ready to go. We typically ship within 2–3 business days — often within 24 hours. New England customers usually see delivery in 2–3 days from shipment.

Are these handmade? +

Yes, every board is crafted by hand as an individual piece. Building these boards requires over 30 steps, which we (the co-founders) work through for every order in our Cape Cod-based studio.
